Under Deansgate
The old 'Manchester and Salford Junction Canal' is now split into 4 sections, mostly dry although this section is under 3ft of water and runs directly underneath deansgate at 90° from the The Great Northern Warehouse in the direction of Granada studios.
In 1939 the tunnels were converted into air raid shelters. Today you can just make out some of the conditions of use on the peeling whitewashed walls, where the print from old advisory and government propaganda posters has soaked into the flaking paintwork.
