Rivington Pike (The Hunting Lodge)

This is the old hunting Lodge on the moors above Bolton. It was used as a place of refuge in bad weather for the 'elitists' during their hunting parties.

The lodge actually stands on an ancient site which once formed part of Britain's beacon defence network. (a series of bonfires the length and breadth of the country) The last time a beacon was lit here in anger was on the night of 19th July 1588, when the Spanish Armada was sighted off the Lizard.

The series of masts over on the right form part of the communications network, along with the largest mast, owned and operated by the BBC for transmitting t.v. known as Winter Hill and stands at 309 Meters high.

These days it is frequented by fell walkers and on a good day, it is possible to see Blackpool Tower on the west coast, about 30 miles away.
