Leslie Main Johnson says: Another remarkable harmonious design and blend of colours...and I'm a sucker for pretty gilding. I always liked paisley and Persian carpets and Indian prints...so of course I find this really beautiful.

Leslie Main Johnson says: I enjoy the clear fresh colours and design of the floral motif, and also find the calligraphy ineresting. It's quite distinct from the more ornate manuscript above.

Leslie Main Johnson says: I was really intrigued by the lug wheeled wagon and the horse collar....also the lovely diaper work in the sky. There are not many images I've seen that really show Medieval conveyances.

Leslie Main Johnson says: The visible homey detail in this domestic scene is wonderfully evocative of daily life....the mechanism of the pot hanger, the tongs, the grill, the kettle on the hob, Joseph's pattens, and the good pewter dishes all carefully placed on the high shelf...

Leslie Main Johnson says: I've known of this image for a long time, but it was in grainy black and white in my source. I think the wooden baby walker is amazing [of course- Papa is a carpenter], and I love the band loom with its little cloth beam and warp beam which is very intriguing. Also Joseph planing the beam...and wonderful BLUE colour on Mary's gown.

Leslie Main Johnson says: I'm fascinated by traditional fishing technologies, and value this image of European fish traps and dipnet. It makes a very interesting comparison with Indigenous North American fishing technologies.

Leslie Main Johnson says: The illuminations of the 12 century St Alban's Psalter are distinctive and lovely....very elongated, ethereal figures. The colour balance of this scan is more toward yellows, changing violet tints to browns, and making the greens and golds quite vibrant
