World map, 1793
Map of the world in the late 18th century. Note that Australia is called New Holland, and Tasmania appears as a southern extension to the main land mass. Note also that Africa north of the equator is called Negroland, and that much of western Canada is unexplored territory. There appears to be a few fugitive marks at the bottom of the map; presumably they were the first indications of a previously unknown land mass, now called Antarctica.
