Oregon Sunstones in Rhyolite - UVc

From Harney County, Oregon, USA comes this 8" wide piece of rhyolite containing Oregon Sunstones, a plagioclastic feldspar with the calcium (anorthite) percentage in the range of 10 to 30% (aka oligoclase). Oregon sunstones contain small bits of metallic copper inclusions.

 

 

The red fluorescence under UVc is due to Fe3+ replacing Al3+ ions within the aluminum silicate framework.
