Synthetic Fluorescent Mineral Experiment/Art: Partiyte_27 - UVc

From the basement lab comes this 3.5" wide specimen.

On an aluminum tray mixes for CaS:Mn, SrS:Pb, and CaS:Cu were placed in a thin layer in a vertical striped pattern (Left to Right: CaS:Mn, SrS:Pb, CaS:Cu, CaS:Mn and SrS:Pb). The sample was then well heated with a MAPP torch until the salt had melted.

CaS:Mn mix: fresh CaCO3 {1 spn}, S {1 spn}, NaCl {1.5 spn} + MnSO4 ssol {1 drops} + PbCl2 ssol {1 drop}

SrS:Pb mix: AA SrCO3 {1 spn}, S {1 spn}, NaCl {1.5 spn} + PbCl2 ssol {1 drop}

CaS:Cu mix: fresh CaCO3 {1 spn}, S {1 spn}, NaCl {1.5 spn} + malachite {few grains} + PbCl2 ssol {1 drop}

Contains:

CaS:Mn (FL+PHOS! Red,Orange >UVa,bc)

SrS:Pb (FL+PHOS!! Yellowish blue,Yellow/Green/Cyan >UVa,bc)

CaS:Cu (FL+PHOS Blue,Blue/Pink >UVa,bc)

Shown under UVc light.

Key:

WL = White light (halogen + LED)

FL = Fluoresces

PHOS = Phosphorescent

Blue = 450nm,

UVa = 368nm (LW), UVb = 311nm (MW), UVc = 254nm (SW)

'>' = "stimulated by:", '!' = "bright", '~' = "dim"
