Synthetic Fluorescent Mineral Experiment/Art: Partiyte_15 - UVc

From the basement lab comes this 3.5" wide specimen. An attempt to create a "rainbow rock".

On an aluminum tray CaS:Mn, SrS:Pb and CaS:Cu were spread in a thin layer from left to right. The sample was then well heated with a MAPP torch until most of the salt had melted. It appears as if the CaS:Cu was contaminated with Mn.

CaS:Mn mix: fresh CaCO3 {0.5 spn}, S {0.5 spn}, NaCl {1 spn} + MnSO4 ssol {1 drop}

SrS:Pb mix: AA SrCO3 {0.5 spn}, S {0.5 spn}, NaCl {1 spn} + PbCl2 ssol {1 drop}

CaS:Cu mix: fresh CaCO3 {0.5 spn}, S {0.5 spn}, NaCl {1 spn} + CuCl2 {5 xtls}

Contains:

CaS:Mn (FL+PHOS! Orange >UVabc)

SrS:Pb (FL+PHOS!! Greenish blue,Yellow green >UVa,bc)

CaS:Cu (FL+PHOS Blue/Pink >UVabc)

Shown under UVc light.

Key:

WL = White light (halogen + LED)

FL = Fluoresces

PHOS = Phosphorescent

Blue = 450nm,

UVa = 368nm (LW), UVb = 311nm (MW), UVc = 254nm (SW)

'>' = "stimulated by:", '!' = "bright", '~' = "dim"
