Synthetic Fluorescent Mineral Experiment/Art: Partiyte_7 - UVc

From the basement lab comes this 3.5" wide specimen. Willemite comes to the party....

On an aluminum tray containing a bed of salt + 40 drops of a silicate solution, Zn2SiO4:Mn, CaS:Mn and SrS were spread in a thin layer. The Zn2SiO4 mix (willemite) was placed around the periphery, the SrS mix (strontium sulfide) was placed between and the CaS mix (calcium sulfide) was placed in the center. The sample was then well heated with a MAPP torch until most of the salt had melted.

Zn2SiO4 mix: penny ZnCl2 sol + sodium silicate sol / filtered, dried, fired + NaCl {2 spn}

CaS mix: fresh CaCO3 {1 spn}, S {1 spn}, NaCl {2 spn} + MnSO4 sat. sol {1.1 drops}

SrS mix: AA SrCO3 {1 spn}, S {1 spn}, NaCl {1 spn}

Contains:

SrS (FL+PHOS!! Greenish yellow >UVa,bc)

CaS (FL+PHOS! Reddish orange, Orange >UVa,bc)

Zn2SiO4 (FL+PHOS Green >UVc)

The orange "vein" (under UVab) between the ZnSiO4:Mn and the SrS may be ZnS:Mn. ??

Shown under UVc light.

Key:

WL = White light (halogen + LED)

FL = Fluoresces

PHOS = Phosphorescent

Blue = 450nm,

UVa = 368nm (LW), UVb = 311nm (MW), UVc = 254nm (SW)

'>' = "stimulated by:", '!' = "bright", '~' = "dim"
