Luminescence Alchemy: "Jack-o-lite" from local calcite - UVc
FOV: 3" wide.
Calcium sulfide made by heating calcium carbonate with hardware store sulfur in molten salt (aka "Jack-o-lite"). The calcium carbonate came from local rockshop calcite that fluoresced orange under UVa possibly due to cerium impurities. A small amount of MnCl2 was added before the salt mixture was melted. The in-homogeneous color demonstrates the high sensitivity the fluroescence has to impurities.
