Luminescence Alchemy: Zinc Sulfide - UVa

Zinc sulfide based phosphor made by heating homemade zinc carbonate with sulfur and salt until the salt was melted. The specimen on the left contains copper impurities while the specimen on the right contains manganese impurities. Both specimens also contain a very small amount of lead.

 

Contains:

ZnS:Cu+,Pb2+ (FL+PHOS Green/Blue >UVabc)

ZnS:Mn2+,Pb2+ (FL+PHOS Orange/Pink >UVabc)

 

Shown under UVa light.

 

Key:

WL = White light (halogen + LED)

FL = Fluoresces

PHOS = Phosporescent

UVa = 368nm (LW), UVb = 311nm (MW), UVc = 254nm (SW)
