Crocus

Crocus growing amongst some broom like ground hugging plant. Alpine Garden, Christchurch Botanic Gardens, New Zealand.

These caught me by surprise being out late July (usually the coldest part of winter) - It has been an extremely mild winter, and while I expect this sort of carry on from the narcissus, snowdrops and other excitable species, I had though these guys had a keener sense of propriety and would not be out quite yet.

Or indeed it is just as likely these are a resurgence of autumn blooming crocus as 3 months prior i was photographing very similar looking blooms in the exact same spot, so inclined to believe these might be autumn-blooming crocuses come back out of season rather than spring-blooming ones come out early. On the other hand, some of the other crocuses out just now are definitely the ones I expect in spring.

The seasons just get weirder the more we mess up our planet.
