To Serve and To Protect

This is a local fireman that was shot in the fire station.

This was shot with a Nikon D3 and a 70-200mm f/2.8 at 150mm. My camera was set to manual with an exposure of f5.6 and 1/60th second. Lighting included a Nikon SB800 with a shoot-through umbrella above and on right of camera set at 1/4th power (about a stop under exposed because of the loss of light because of the umbrella), a Nikon SB800 with snoot aimed at fireman's face and set at 1/16th power, a Nikon SB800 with a snoot aimed at the fireman's upper chest set at 1/16th power and a SB24 aimed at the fire truck behind fireman set at 1/128th power with a gobo to stop light from filling in back of fireman. I also had a reflector to camera left to put a little even light back on his face and the fire truck. All strobes were triggered with Alien Bee triggers. It tock about 5 or 6 shots before I got the lighting the way that I wanted it. I then tock about 8-10 shots looking for the expression that I wanted. I told him that I wanted an expression that he would have on the job. His fellow fireman confirmed that what I was seeing is what he often sees at a fire, so I thought I "got it".
