World Heritage: Speicherstadt & Kontorhaus District III

The Chilehaus, famed for its curved walls meeting in the shape of a ship's bow and staggered balconies like decks. Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus district (Office district) are two urban areas in the port city of Hamburg. It is one of the largest historic ensembles of port warehouses in the world and also includes a connecting network of short canals. Speicherstadt was built between 1885 and 1927 and the Kontorhaus district from the 1920s to the 1940s to house port-related businesses. After World War II air-raids the district was partly rebuilt from 1949 to 1967.

The Chilehaus was built 1922-24 and designed by architect Fritz Höger. The client was the shipping magnate Henry B. Sloman, who made his fortune trading saltpeter from Chile, hence the name Chile House. It was the first building in the Kontorhaus district and a major work of expressionist architecture in Germany.
