Kiruna Church I

The church is one of Sweden's largest wooden buildings. Both the roof and parts of the walls have wood shingle cladding. It is painted with traditional red paint that contains pigment from the Swedish copper mine in Falun.

The church has been voted the foremost built in Sweden before 1950. Built: 1909-12. Architect: Gustaf Wickman (1858-1916).

The church has centrally-planned design (Swedish: centralkyrka).

This building is selected for the book "1001 Buildings You Must See Before You Die", editor in chief Mark Irving.

In August 2025 the whole church was lifted and moved three miles (5 km) to prevent it being swallowed by the underground mine. A construction with 224 wheels was used.
