47 372 Wisbech

The previous picture featured a Class 31 on the speedlink feeder service from Wisbech Spillers Sidings, but by far the more common power at this time was a Class 37 or 47. With a storm looming, 47372 waits time to depart with the 16.22 to March Yard just before the VDA wagons shown here were replaced by more modern stock as seen in the photo of 31187.

This was 2nd August 1983. 47372 had been a rare beast for several years when between 1967 and 1979 she had been one of the fleet based at Knottingley for working the South Yorkshire coal traffic. At this point she had been reallocated to Sheffield Tinsley.

After various periods of storage between 1996 & 2004 it was converted to become 57314 in the Virgin fleet. It is now based at Carnforth and is in the West Coast fleet maroon livery.

Scan of a discoloured print.
