This is a superb example of the work of a master silversmith. Every fine detail of the winged cherub, nails of passion, and foliated scrolls in chase and repoussé techniques was marvelously executed. This piece was possibly on one side of a silver guion or banner aloft on a pole, carried at the start of a procession for particular rites—like the Corpus Christi and Holy Thursday Masses in a Catholic church—and eventually deposited in a ciriales waiting at the altar. This may, based on the presence of ring eyelets above the wings, have also been used as an ornament in an opulent silver church retablo. Beautifully presented in a custom-made frame.
