Stool

A primitive balayong taburete with oval seat

Estimate: PHP 35,000 - 40,000

Last Quarter, 19th century

Cebu

Balayong

50 x 44 x 35 cm (19 3/4 x 17 1/4 x 13 3/4 in)

Provenance:

Formerly from the collection of a renowned business magnate from Quezon City

Made of the highly-prized balayong wood, a type of indigenous rosewood, this primitive taburete (Spanish) or bangkito (Tagalog) is fancier and more exuberant than most humble three-legged stools used for seating during meals, reading periodicals, or leisurely conversations in and out of the house. This chair is an even rarer type, with an oval-shaped seat engraved with twisted rope and scallop patterns around the top edge. Before the halfway mark down the splaying round tapered legs are fan swirl rosettes carved beautifully on the visible faces, while stretchers are tenoned through the inside and joined to a central cylindrical finial. The legs end in seemingly delicate horse hoof feet.
