Misterios del Rosario Painting
A stellar ‘Misterios del Rosario’ oil on wood painting
Estimate: PHP 300,000 - 330,000
Unknown artist, Filipino
19th century
Lightwood, paint, gold leaf, topped with glass
40 x 31 cm (15 1/2 x 12 in)
The ‘Mysteries of the Rosary’ depicts the Blessed Virgin in the center, in full regalia with lustrous gold-leafed details on her crown, aureola, and the brocaded mantle and dress, carrying the child Jesus and standing on clouds encircled by Rosary-bearing angels. Surrounded by linked medallions or tondos representing the 15 mysteries or events of the lives of Jesus and Mary: the joyful mysteries, the sorrowful mysteries, and the glorious mysteries. The lush climbing rose vines emanate from a single bush, valiantly standing on burning ground. Roses have always been associated with the Virgin’s love and purity, and the fire is in reference to her ancient Orthodox title as the ‘Unburnt Bush of the Mother of God.’ Inset are the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Beautifully painted and an accurate reminder for devout contemplation. Oval board mounted on a wooden grid and topped with glass.
Lot 174 of the Salcedo Auctions auction on 26 June 2021. Please see salcedoauctions.com for more details.
