Four-Poster Bed
A stately four-poster canopy bed
Estimate: PHP 180,000 - 200,000
Last Quarter, 19th century
San Isidro, Nueva Ecija
Red narra, cane / solihiya
260 x 215 x 134 cm
(102 x 84 x 92 in)
Lot 450 of the Salcedo Auctions auction on 21 September 2019. Please see salcedoauctions.com for more details.
A well-conceived bed with elaborate and very finely carved details, designed to impress. It may appear as a gallimaufry of Rococo and Renaissance Revival styles, but the impression is nothing short of stately and elegant. The imposing rectangular headboard, canopy and bed frame brackets are pierce-carved with acanthus leaves, scrolls, flowers, fruits (duhat or Java plum and chesa or canistel), and foliage. The crests rise and fall gracefully along the perimeters of the canopy like cascading waves. The legs and post supports have turned rings, spools, balls and vases; and the barley-twist posts are deeply carved. The bed frame, carved with long lunettes on the sides, is tenoned through the post supports carved with round cabochons. Such exquisite work! The superb craftsmanship and very good condition justifiably make this one of the best provincial beds we have handled.
