Kamagong Side Table

A tall kamagong side table

Last Quarter, 19th century, Manila

Kamagong with brass mount

78.5 x 53 x 34.5 cm (31 x 21 x 13 1/2 in)

Made of precious dark kamagong wood, the tall tapering legs – with beautifully carved rings, cup and cylinder turnings and reeded shafts that terminate in blunt arrow feet separated by rings – support the two-piece top and frieze drawer. The drawer has a keyhole protected by an escutcheon, and old replacement pulls, which when opened reveals two compartments. A divided compartment to segregate money suggests the possibility that this may have been used at one point as a tienda table in a store.
