Bournemouth as I nearly remember it
By the 1960s, a number of relatives on my mothers side had ended up in the Bournemouth area. As a child therefore, several weeks a year would have been spent staying at one or another, preferably the aunt and uncle living close to the LSWR main line near to Branksome! Throughout this time I must have watched trains at Central station, but I have no particular recollection of this.
Here we have unrebuilt Merchant Navy pacific 35015 'Rotterdam Lloyd' waiting to leave on a Bournemouth West to Waterloo train. The date is 7 April 1953, some three years before I was born, but a familiar enough scene until 1967.
35015 was rebuilt in 1958 and withdrawn in 1964, sent north to Yorkshire for scrapping along with 35002.
Scanned from a 6x6cm size negative in my collection.
