Design | Knowledgebase Homepage
The Knowledgebase is a useful tool to all people, yet is rarely used by new residents.
The purpose of creating this sketch is to change that by bringing a refreshing flash-based homepage to the forefront of the KB.
This PRELIMINARY sketch was designed with a number of things in mind.
*New Resident Confusion -
Simplicity is the key with learning tools. I didn't want to overcomplicate it AT ALL to avoid bombarding an already bewildered Newbie with yet more bewilderment.
*Useable from 13+
The KB covers Teen Second Life too. With this in mind, the homepage has to be easily useable by a 13 year old to any age above.
*Appealing minimalistic design.
A branding of the KB wouldn't go amiss either. I nicked my redesign of the SL Logo and turned it into a KB logo instead and added the motif 'hands on learning' - which is what the KB is.
*Bare bones - The homepage only covers the essential basics of being new. Answering alot of the questions a new residents asks quickly. For more advanced info the KBadvanced (nice brand name there) - button would be selected taking you to the Usual KB page, allowing the user to wander free.
*Tie in with the SL homepage. I wanted a similar design, but something that was also new in of itself to appeal to the youngsters. It had to be easy to understand. Yes, it might seem a bit patronizing and spoon-feeding to adults, but its not primarily for their benefit.
The blue text in the article body works like a hyperlink, taking you to that page A la wikipedia style.
