The Foto Funnel Tunnel
This passageway holds very special memories for me in my life's journey and in particular, the part associated with photography. Firstly, it is a very important throughway under the John McDonald grandstand at the Brisbane Exhibition (Show) Grounds. So first connection is that as a kid and up until they took away all the traditional elements of the show (known to Brisbanites as "The Ekka") I loved going every year, sometimes multiple times with my parents and sister and as an adult with my wife and daughter especially when she was young. Great memories and I learnt a lot as well.
I formed a close bond with Queensland's sugar and other agricultural and livestock industries as a result of going. Helped a lot with school too. But I was never one for the sideshow rides, confirmed when being stupidly brave during courting of my dear wife but never to be experienced again!
The other important aspect of this location, apart from a place where at peak times one would be crammed up (funnelled) close and personal with fellow show goers is that what is now that elaborate door on the right hand side and a diner (I think) was once the location of the very grand photographic exhibition which showcased some amazing mounted prints but also presented a wonderful slide show. I really loved this part because for most of my photographic life I took predominantly slides.
The whole thing of course is now way downsized and relocated. I haven't been to the show in years as apart from my rather negative feelings towards the changes, it's early August timing generally conflicts with our holidays, I am not aware if they now have a showing of digital images or any for that matter. I hope in this regard they have kept up! Perhaps one day I will get back and check that out.
