Gertie is back.

Some of you may have met Gertie before. She is an Australian Galah, one of a number that visit us most days for some wild bird seed (including sometimes a little extra treat of sunflower seeds).

She is the dearest of birds, nearly tame as she may have been someone's pet and while she won't quite eat from our hand, she will allow us to get right beside her, even face to face. She comes right up to our back door and looks in. Sometimes she comes in the morning and sometimes the late afternoon and she usually has the knack of coming when the pigeons are off somewhere else. Just as well, as she takes her time eating and can be there over an hour.

We only put the seed out when our bird visitors arrive or the pigeons devour it within minutes.

Gertie's full name is Dirty Gertie as the first few times she came with mud all over her beak from grubbing around in the mud and a totally dishevelled appearance. And she usually waddles over and eats off a large ceramic plate we lay out for her on the ground, not the table with a small lid as here.

We know one day she will fly off and never come back and we will be the poorer for her going and the richer for the blessing of her visits.
