Ten Years Gone

"Sir, the satellites will be overhead soon, we need to start heading back."

"Then back we'll go Sergeant, no reason to give ourselves away yet. Not for another few weeks anyway."

A few weeks. A few weeks to go, to make up for the last ten years stolen from all of us. Korea, battle of the Yalu, just when the Chinese got involved and damn near threw us off the peninsula. We were expecting it, but we weren't expecting a soviet atom bomb in Seoul, or the follow up attack across the pacific northwest. America fell hard and fast, The President refused to use atomic weapons on US soil and it appeared the soviets didn't want to either. September 5th 1954, the United States of America officially surrendered to the communist aggressors.

For the next ten years, people would skirmish in the streets with the occupiers, try to form rebel cells in the backwoods, take targets of opportunity out when they could, let the reds know they would never be welcome here. The military though was the biggest disappointment to the people. Instead of fighting after the surrender, many of them continued to work their same jobs, just against their countrymen. Some left, joined their own little rebel cells, we hunted them down still. Blood of our friends drawn across our bayonets, and spilled by our bullets.

One month ago, the reds rolled into a small coastal town, eliminated anyone they thought was an active rebel, arrested those they couldn't prove otherwise, whisked them away to locations only their captors knew about. That was the final straw for us. We defected, a third of us, hiding in the hills of West Virginia, small mining town full of patriots willing to help hide us. Somehow they all look up to me, just a Colonel but the highest ranking officer to defect. With the rebel cells in this state willing to feint an attack near Richmond for us, we can secure our position here and move on Virginia Beach, secure NAS Oceana, give our overseas allies a port to dock at. Once we start making progress who knows how many others will join us when they see the progress we can make.

Just a few more weeks.
