Wounded

We spent days waiting for the Americans. By the time the armored columns arrived we had only rifles to defend ourselves. I was hit in the side, it felt like my insides were turned inside out and on fire. We had no medical supplies left, no rockets, I didn't even have my helmet. We had to surrender, it was the only way we could survive. The Americans would treat my wounds, feed us, shelter us. Better than death, and even death is preferable to anything we could expect with the Russians. Anything is better than the Russians. Anything.
