Four Symbols on the Sumida River Terrace
A bird, a tiger, a tortoise and a dragon, are drawn on the Sumida River Terrace. They are four symbols of Chinese constellation: the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, the Black Tortoise of the North, and the Azure Dragon of the East.
This photo was taken at Ryogoku. It is known for the Sumo Arena. Those symbols mean Sumo Wrestling Ring: a circle-shaped ring with a roof supported by red, white, black and blue columns (now, the roof is suspended and the colored columns were changed to colored tassels).
