Arakawa River Water Level Indicator in Kameido
Well, I am alive.
As soon as the earthquake hit my office, I knew it was an unusually huge one but far. Thirty seconds later, I started to wonder how long it would continue. There was a moment when I thought this was only beginning and the quake would get even stronger. I think it continued more than one minute, probably two.
In Tokyo and Kanagawa, several people were killed, some buildings had fires, trains were completely stopped, and some areas had power failure. That’s all. The difference between Tokyo Bay Area and unfortunate Tohoku were made by the tsunami.
This photo shows an object near JR Kameido Station. LED lights and a small turtle display current water level of the Arakawa River. Kameido exists in undersea level area. So, the water level is normally higher than the ground level.
This monument has some marks, which tell water levels made by some disasters in history. The highest mark is at 4.21m. It was made by a tsunami in 1917. The top of the object is as high as the embankment. If we have a tsunami higher than it, it will give us huge damages.
When I took this photo, the water level was at the bottom. I think I went there at low tide.

It appears that “Tsunami in 1917” means a flood caused by a typhoon. These days, tsunami means a wave caused by an earthquake. But the word meant a huge wave coming from the sea 100 years ago. So, flood caused by a typhoon is listed as a tsunami here.
