Tsunashima-kaido Overpass across JR Nanbu Line in 2022 April: 5

Those yellow cylinders are called “cushion drums” in Japan. We often see them at branching points of expressways. They have water inside, and if a car hit it, it absorbs the impact. They had been put on this road as parts of barricade around the construction site during widening work of the overpass.

After some googling, I have found that they are called “Fitch barriers” in the US. It seems that it often has sand in it in the US because water can be frozen in winter. Maybe “cushion drams” also have sand in northern part of Japan.

It is interesting that the warning lights on them were active. The light is powered by solar cells, so they can work without any power supply.
