Hyakunin Isshu No.95 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Saki-no-Dai-sojo Jien. “Saki-no-Dai-sojo” means he was a high priest. Jien is his name as a priest. He is a son of Fujiwara-no Tadamichi, the poet No.76. He is known as the author of “Gukan-sho,” books about history of Japan.

 

This poem expresses the author's determination to help the people of this painful world. It refers an old poem by Saicho, the founder of the Tendai sect.
