Hyakunin Isshu No.81 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Go-Tokudai-ji-no Sa-daijin. Tokudai-ji is his family name. His name is Tokudaiji Sanesada. Sa-daijin was his position in the imperial court. “Go” means he is the second “Tokudai-ji-no Sa-daijin.” The first Tokudai-ji-no Sa-daijin was his grandfather Tokudai-ji Saneyoshi. Their family name is a little confusing, because they are sometimes called as “Fujiwara.” Since there were too many Fujiwaras, some of them began to use other family names, such as the name of the place where they lived at the time. Tokudai-ji is such a sub-Fujiwara family name. It was the name of a temple which was created by Saneyoshi.

The poem describes a dawn in early summer. The author heard the voice of a lesser cuckoo and looked in that direction, but the bird had already left. What he saw was only the moon in the early morning sky.
