Hyakunin Isshu No.68 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Sanjo-in. The name means he is retired Emperoro Sanjo.

When he was Emperor, Fujiwara-no Michinaga was controlling the imperial court. Though he had an empress, Michinaga sent a daughter of his as the second empress. If she had had a male baby, his relationship with Michinaga might have been restored, but they had only a female baby. Michinaga wanted a grandson of his (the son of the previous emperor Ichijo) to be the new emperor. Finally, he was forced to retire due to eye disease and two fires at the court.

He created this poem when he retired as emperor. It says that he does not want to live long in this gloomy world, but if he will, he will remember tonight's moon fondly.
