Hyakunin Isshu No.65 of Yoga Promenade

The purple chair on which this poem is printed is shown in “Another Section of Yoga Promenade.”

The poet is Sagami. The name means that her husband was the governor of Sagami country. Her real name is unknown.

This poem talks about a woman who lost her love. It says that the woman has lost her will, and she is sorry that her sleeves soaked with her tears are being ruined. What she feels sorrier is that her reputation will be ruined. There may be hidden meaning in the poem, but I do not know. Perhaps she wanted to say that women would lose everything while men’s reputation would not be damaged. Anyway, When Sagami composed this poem, she was not grieving over a lost love, because she composed this poem in a poem competition.
