Hyakunin Isshu No.63 of Yoga Promenade
The poet is Sakyo-no-daibu Michimasa. Sakyo-no-daibu is his position in the Imperial Court. His name is Fujiwara-no Michimasa. He is a grandson of Fujiwara-no Michitaka and Takashina-no Kishi (poet No.54).
It is said that he composed this poem when retired Emperor Sanjo (he is poet No.68) forbade Michimasa to meet a princess of his. In the poem, he wishes he could tell her in person, "I give up my love for you," instead of through a person or a letter.
You may feel a little sorry for him when you hear only the episode, but I can't sympathize with him because he had committed some terrible crimes.
