Hyakunin Isshu No.59 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Akazome Emon. Akazome is her family name. Emon means “gate guard.” Her father was an officer in ministry of gate guard. Her real name is unknown.

It is said that Akazome Emon composed this poem for a woman who had waited for Fujiwara-no Michitaka (husband of Takashina-no Kishi, the poet No.54) to visit, but he did not come. The poem says that if she had known that he would not come, she would have gone to sleep, but she stayed awake until near dawn and saw the moon was setting.
