Hyakunin Isshu No.53 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Udaisho Mitsutsuna-no Haha. “Haha” means “mother.” “Udaisho” is a position in Imperial Court. The name means she was the mother of Fujiwara-no Michitsuna. Her real name is unknown. She was a wife of Fujiwara-no Kaneie who became the top of Fujiwara family later. She is also known as the writer of “Kagero-nikki.”

The background of the poem is told in “Kagero-nikki.” After she and Kaneie had the first son Michitsuna, Kaneie visited her less often because he loved another woman. One night, she did not open the door when Kaneie visited her residence. He gave up waiting and it seemed that he decided to visit the new lover. Then, she sent the poem to him. It says “You made me sad and alone through nights. Do you understand how long I feel it is?”
