Hyakunin Isshu No.43 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Gon-Chunagon Atsutada. “Gon-Chunagon” is a position in Imperial Court. His name is Fujiwara-no Atsutada. His father, Fujiwara-no Tokihira, was the person who made Sugawara-no Michizane (the poet No.24) demoted away. Atsutada was born three years after Michizane died and died at the age of 38. His death at a young age was one of the incidents that reinforced the rumors of Michizane's curse.

It was customary for aristocrats at that time for a man to visit a woman, spend a night with her, then send her a poem upon his return. This poem is one of them. It states that loves he felt in the past were nothing compared to his current feelings. It sounds like an expression that would make the woman who received it happy.
