Hyakunin Isshu No.42 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Kiyohara-no Motosuke. He is a son or grandson of Kiyohara-no Fukayabu, the poet No. 36.

 

It is recorded that this poem was composed on behalf of a man who had lost his love. The poem says that they had promised their love would not be destroyed, just as no wave, no matter how big, would reach the top of Sue-no-matsuyama, a hill in Miyagi Prefecture. According to the internet, Sue-no-matsuyama became well known after a big tsunami that hit Tohoku area in 869 did not reach its top. The tsunami in 2011 also did not reach its top.
