Hyakunin Isshu No.39 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Sangi Hitoshi. “Sangi” is the position in the imperial court. His name was Minamoto-no Hitoshi.

It is said that Hitoshi sent this poem to a woman. It starts with the view of a wild field of short bamboos and weeds. The word “Shino-hara (field with short bamboos)” is connected to the word “shinobu (endure by hiding one’s intention).” It is concluded by talking about his love that is too much to hide.
