Hyakunin Isshu No.17 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Ariwara-no Narihira. One of his brothers is Ariwara-no Yukihira, the poet No.16.

He created the poem in front of a byobu (kind of a folding screen) which has a picture of red leaves flowing on the Tatsuta River. He praises the scene with some exaggeration.

Some studies say this poem is the best known in Hyakunin Isshu. Narihira is also well known for himself. There are several legends about him. His name has appeared in my photo stream as the name of an area near Tokyo Sky Tree. For example, “Name Board of the Kita-jikken River.” The area was named after him because it was said his grave was nearby. But Narihira's graves are all over Japan. I'm not sure if it is real or not.
