Hyakunin Isshu No.11 of Yoga Promenade
The poet is Sangi Takamura. Sangi was his position in the Imperial Court. He is also known as Ono-no Takamura.
Sangi Takamura created the poem when he was sent to be exiled to Oki Island. There is an interesting story behind his exile. He was selected as an envoy to China and his first two attempts failed. The third attempt was to be made with two ships, his boss's ship and his own, but his boss swapped the ships because boss’s ship was broken and leaked. Sangi Takamura got angry and refused to board the ship. Then, Takamura wrote a Chinese poem satirizing the envoy project and the Imperial Court, which angered the Retired Emperor Saga, and he was banished to Oki.
In Hyakunin Isshu No.11, the author asks fishing boats to tell people that his ship headed for distant many islands. This is a poem about setting sail, but it becomes even more interesting if you know about his troubles with the ship for China.
By the way, his exile was lifted two years later, and he returned to Kyoto.
