Hyakunin Isshu No.8 of Yoga Promenade

The poet is Kisen-hoshi. The poem tells that people rumors the author went to Mount Uji because everything made him gloomy, but he lives there in peace. “Uji” is a double-meaning word in this poem: Uji-yama and "gloomy."

The mountain is now called “Kisen-yama” after him. His name also became a brand of tea in Kyoto, “Kisen.” It is interesting that a high-grade “Kisen” appears as a double-meaning word in a well-known comic poem composed when Commodore Perry came from US in the 19h century. The poem tells that just four cups of “Jo Kisen (High Kisen)” keep people awake all night. The name “Jokisen” also means “steamship” (steam = Joki, ship = sen).
