Railyard at JR Chigasaki Station and Parking 215 Series Train
Taken in a Tokaido Sagami Line train. The white train with purple line is a 215 series. Its cars were all double decker except the first car and the last car. The design was expected to increase capacity. When its operation started, JR East noticed that a double decker car should not carry more people than the number of the seats. The problem was each car had only two doors, so standing passengers would make mess when the train stopped at a station.
Therefore, 215 series trains had been assigned to “Home Liner” service like Shonan Liner that requires seat ticket to get on. Such service is wanted for commuter train only in the morning or evening. So, 215 series used to have long lunch break at the railyard at the east of Chigasaki Station.
In 2021 March, 215 series lost its job because JR East replaced “Home Liner” services with express service. Information on the web says all four 215 series trains were dismantled.
Note: At first, I thought this photo was taken in a Tokaido Line train arriving at Chigasaki. After re-checking the photo, I concluded that I took this photo in a Sagami Line train leaving Chigasaki Station.
