Water Level Record at Iwabuchi Floodgate

This pole exists in front of the old red gate of Iwabuchi floodgate. It tells the high water level records of this place. Kathleen in 1947 gave the highest water level “AP 8.70m.” (AP stands for “Arakawa Peil.” Peil is a Dutch word meaning “level.” AP means the standard water level of the Arakawa River.) The flood caused by Kathleen killed 1077 people.

“Beware of Flood” shows another list of high water levels recorded at the Sumida River. The typhoons in the list are completely different from the typhoons shown here. The reason is the other list exists 15km downstream from here. The spot is near from the sea, and the high water levels were made by the storm tides. On the other hand, the list in this photo shows high water levels made by heavy rains. Iwabuchi floodgate will be closed for such a rain. So, these typhoons did not affect the water level at the Sumida River.
