Lifting up the 6000t Truss Box

This view reminds me of my favorite scene in "2061: Odyssey Three" by A. C. Clarke. A young officer had a simple but crazy idea to get the fuel for the rescue mission to Jupiter. He was sure that the captain would turn him down. So, he told the idea to Dr Floyd and asked his support. Dr Floyd said “Let me give you all the reasons why it can't be done. Then you can tell me why I'm wrong”.

6000t truss structure bridge beam is completed and they have to move it onto the support, but they have a problem. The largest floating crane in Japan can lift up only 4100t. Larger floating cranes in the world are expected to be used in an ocean and cannot enter the port of Tokyo. So what should they do? The answer is simple: bring more than one crane, and lift it up. However, there should be a lot of reasons why it can't be done. I believe they had a lot of simulations for each reason.

People may take it for granted that the job is done without any problem. As an engineer, I think of the unsung effort in the background.

This picture was taken from the rooftop of Tokyo Big Sight.
