A Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line Train Going across the Kanda River

Tokyo Metro Marunouchi line is a subway. Its tunnel runs near the ground level.

The Kanda River flows in a valley near Ochanomizu. It is actually an artificial valley which was dug 400 years ago. Since this area was relatively high, the surface of the river is far below the ground level.

As a result, the surface of the river is lower than the Marunouchi line track level. The bridge directly sticks out from the wall of the valley.

This picture was taken from Hijiri-bashi, a bridge across the Kanda River. Another picture taken on Hijiri-bashi is shown in "Night View from Hijiri-bashi".
