The Northeastern End of the Longest Railroad Crossing in Japan
This is the northeastern end of the longest railroad crossing in Japan. It exists in Haijima.
Haijima is a hub station of this area. JR Ome line and Hachiko line, Itsuka-ichi line, and Seibu Haijima line stop at this station. There is a rail yard beside the station, and the longest crossing goes across there. It is about 130m long.
You may wonder what happens a train comes when you are on the middle of the crossing. Actually, the tracks on which trains come and go frequently exist only at the northeastern end and the southwestern end. Therefore, the both end are protected by gates, and the rest is just a pavement across the rail yard.
This is obviously unsafe and inefficient. JR made an overpass in the station, and the construction of the elevators completed recently. The crossing will be terminated at the end of this May.
The gate in the picture is closed because a Seibu Haijima line train is going to pass here. A dove is quietly waiting before the closed gate.
