Shinkansen 500 Series Pantograph

Shinkansen 500 series train adopted a unique pantograph: a rod pushing up the power collecting plate. The figure makes less noise. It is said that the pattern on the pantograph works as a vortex generator and reduces the noise.

Somebody says it is wrong to call it pantograph since it does not have mechanical linkage. But I do not know the correct term.

If you look at the picture closely, you will find "Showa" written on the base of the pantograph. It is the name of the shock-absorber maker that manufactured it.
