Air-conditioner Unit in JR Tokyo Synthesis Vehicle Center 3
The panel tells the specification of the unit. It is interesting that it expects 60Hz AC as the power input. For historical reason, the eastern half of Japan uses 50Hz AC, and 60Hz AC is used in the western half of Japan. So, most of JR East AC-powered trains uses 50Hz.
E231 series is a DC-powered train. So, AC power for this unit is generated on the train and frequency does not matter. But why did JR East choose 60Hz, not 50Hz?
Information on web says that E231’s AC power for a vacuum cleaner is also 60Hz. It seems that there is some reason why JR East uses 60Hz AC for machines on E231 series trains.
