Journey by Train
A journey in the buffet car of a train, across Poland, from Lublin to Poznan. The pleasure of a trip by rail in Poland is not something that people seem to talk about, they either want a car, and use the train because there is no other choice. Romance, not really, and yet I am quite happy to jump on one to go somewhere, and not for price or the opportunity to drink.
One of the best trips was in winter, with snow on the ground, to Susiec, not much more than a large village in a forest where the local drunks in the shop openly wondered what the gin we were buying tasted like. The track from Lublin to Krasnobrod was OK, but since the train terminated at the border with Ukraine it was the oldest and most decrepit stock available with broken seats in the compartments. The route at night in the snow from Krasnobrod to Susiec was magical.
